Recently, I was chatting with an online video producer about our ever shrinking attention spans when it comes to viewing online videos, which has seen what used to be 3-5 minute videos down to between 1.5-2 minutes – and what that means for the future of online video, particularly for SME’s…
In addition, my own experience has seen a definite shift from narrating straight factual information films, to much more promotional content.
We came to the conclusion that, if this ever-shortening attention span continues, not only will the videos be shorter and more promotional-focused, SME’s may need to think in terms of 30 second web Commercials or soundbites on their website homepage and/or other social media platforms to keep us engaged, joining the ranks of the much larger nationals and global organisations – many of whom have now made their TV Commercials available online too.
The exceptions may still be on projects such as medical information films, which often include obligatory compliance information, and/or general Explainer videos.
5-10 years ago, the average SME business never imagined having their own video, let alone their very own Commercial-style 30 second video. And where will we be in another 5-10 years even? The 10 second soundbite?!
