Getting into Voice Overs 0

Becoming a Voice Over Artist :

The Pro’s and Cons

As I’ve been doing voice overs for quite a while now, I’m frequently approached by others who are interested in getting involved in our industry. There are a lot of misconceptions that it’s a quick fix-easy-money-kind-of-occupation. There are certainly some great times and experiences to be had in our line of work, and we get to voice and narrate such a wide variety of projects – some high profile on occasions, and others much less so.

It’s also a very satisfying feeling when you’re growing a business, just like any other. The sense of achievement can be immense as, if you’re prepared to put the work in, you invariably get to see results.

Over the coming days and weeks I thought I’d share with you some of the Pro’s and Cons of working in the voice over industry. Here’s the first…

#1 Working From Home: The Solitary Occupation

Pro’s

They say the grass is always greener on the other side, and those that have salaried positions will often say how marvellous it must be to work from home. Yes, there are definitely benefits to working from home; flexibility of working hours, you can put the washing on (maybe not during a voice over session lol!), make as many cups of tea/coffee – or in my case – eat chocolate – as much as you like! Working from home with our own studios, you can service your clients remotely all over the world. You also don’t have to get yourself stressed travelling to and from work very often, and it also saves on travel costs.

Cons

I was reminded recently that, however high up the voice over chain you are, the fact is that working from home means that you’re not only talking to yourself in your booth, but you are working alone.

The reminder came from a very insightful interview (above) that top voice over artists Peter Dickson and Alan Dedicoat gave to Stuart Clarkson for RadioTodayUK a few months ago. In it, Peter talks of our ‘incredibly solitary occupation’. Check it out above.

When considering a voice over career, think very carefully about whether this is an environment in which you would thrive. If you like your own company on a regular basis, then this business could work well for you. If you need lots of social interaction throughout the day, this may be less than ideal!

New voice over promotional video 0

I am pleased to launch my new voice over promotional video, made by the lovely folk at Doodle Ads and, of course, voiced by yours truly!

Primarily marketeers, they use whiteboard animated videos to provide promotional videos for their clients, and I’ve been providing voiceovers for their corporate videos for a while now. This is a transcription of the video narration…

Do you underestimate the impact of your audio? You have just seconds to make an impact. If you are looking to narrate a video, did you know that ‘80% of the quality of your video is in the audio’? If you are looking to maximise that impact, you need the help of a good voice over artist.

Recording audio is not easy. Not only do you have to deliver the script at the right pace, speak it clearly and flawlessly with the right energy, there is all that technical stuff to sort out too!

I voice and audio edit all kinds of things, using my own studio. Things like commercials, corporate and online video, e-learning, toys, apps, games, documentaries, on-hold messaging, to radio imaging. I can even sing! Or maybe you are looking for a narrator for a children’s audio book or story app? I can bring it to life by creating a range of individual personalities to add character to your stories. I can also fully produce it for you too.

I have provided voiceovers for Boots, the NHS, Connexions, DHL, William Hill, Ravensburger, Dulux, Cambridge University Press, and many others. Some of my adverts have been seen on national TV, like Sky and ITV. I can help you get your message heard using a warm, creamy, accent free voice.

In the video you’ll see me in my Studio with my best buddy Mike (my microphone). We’re a double act you see. Nothing gets done without Mike’s input. You pay for me – you get Mike for Free!

Finding good, experienced female voice over artists is a challenge; listen to the samples on this website. If you like the tone and personality of my voice; pick up the phone and call me on 07980 34307 or email me,and let’s put some life into your audio!

If you’re interested in having a animated video like mine, please get in touch and I’d be delighted to introduce you to the Doodle Ads team?

You’re not alone: The ever-present Voice Over in your Life! 0

A while back now, I wrote a blog post about the surprising presence of audio in business.  But, how many times we encounter voice over in our everyday lives too. Over a 24 hour period I recalled how many times I encountered voice over being used. The results may surprise you…

My mobile phone let me down the other day. So, I dialled my network provider’s telephone support service. I encountered their interactive voice recognition software (IVR), from which an IVR voice over spoke, asking me to select options from my touch tone keypad.

They’re a little busy at the moment, so I get a voice over (usually, but always, the same one!) telling me that I may have to wait a while using their on-hold system, Cue an intermittent voice and some calming music, until I elect to select a call back option, which works well.

Sadly, the phone still won’t work after help from their technical team, so I venture to my local mobile phone shop the next day. Result! Not only this, but whilst I’m waiting to be served, I take a look at the new iPad they have on display. On the demonstration model, it features a children’s interactive story app. For that same company, I’ve recently voiced their latest children’s apps.

I continue my shopping escapade, and hear one of my colleagues voicing an in store radio commercial coming over the loudspeakers. It’s always a bit surreal when that happens for me, but quite comforting, and I give a wry smile.supermarket trolley

Later that day, I drive to the supermarket. All is going well, until I get to the checkout and use the self-service automated system. Embarrassingly, the female voice over tells me that I have an ‘unexpected item in bagging area’, and is reminding me of this, with increasing regularity, until I discover…it’s my own handbag. How annoying. I even find myself muttering an unmentionable response in irritation, but it was gratifying to know that she couldn’t answer back ;>).

Driving home, I turn on the radio and hear one of my own commercials that I’d voiced for a radio station.

All is well, we’re home…just in time to put feet up and glance at a bit of TV…another familiar voice comes on in the commercial break…One of my colleagues voicing a commercial. I chuckle… ;>).

Can’t help but to take a peek at The X Factor, to see if Gary Barlow’s feud with Louis Walsh continues…And before I know it, that familiar Voice of God voice over, Peter Dickson, is announcing the next act…

During that 24 hour period I encountered no less than 8 different types of voiceover… In my case, two of them I had either voiced, or had a direct connection with.  How many can you count during the same period?

So, whenever you go about your business, remember, you may not be alone…a voice over may be lurking there with you, just waiting to help… ;>)

Ahem…’Is That A Frog In Your Voice Over, Madam?’ 0

When reading a recent blog post by another voice over artist on pausing

Frog

Never have a 'frog' in your throat!

for breath during a voiceover read, I was reminded of a session I once did not so long back with the client present in the adjacent listening booth. On that day I had the misfortune to be recovering from a cold/cough.

‘Does she normally do that?’ enquired the client during my unintentional impression of Eartha Kitt with a frog in her throat. ‘Oh, no, Lindsay’s just a bit gravelly today, she’s had a cough’ replied the sound producer…’Can we just do a couple of pick-ups Lindsay?’. ‘No problem’ I said…or perhaps I should have retorted: ‘Shall I pick up from where the ‘frog’ left off then?’ Tip for voiceovers…as part of your training, you must learn the technique of never developing a cold…and certainly, never a ‘frog’….
